Custom Electric Mokes: What Makes a Mokes Unlimited Build Different?

A truly custom electric Moke should be more than a standard vehicle with a different set of wheels and new upholstery. It should be designed around its owner, its destination and the experience it is intended to create. That is how we approach every custom build at Mokes Unlimited.

Some customers envision a refined coastal cruiser. Others want a distinctive Moke for a beach home, private community or resort property. Some need additional passenger capacity, easier entry or the range and performance required to use their Moke more often. Each project begins differently—and the finished Moke should reflect that.

A Custom Moke Begins With a Purpose

Before selecting colors or accessories, we consider how the vehicle will actually be used.

Will it primarily cruise through a neighborhood or coastal community? Does it need to carry four people or six passengers comfortably? Is easy entry important? Will it require increased range, stronger acceleration or the added torque needed for a larger custom build? Those questions influence everything that follows, including the body design, seating configuration, suspension, wheels and tires, lithium battery, motor, controller programming and finishing materials. The objective is not to add as many options as possible. It is to create a cohesive custom electric Moke in which the design, materials and performance system work together.

Custom Easy Entry and Six-Passenger Engineering

Mokes Unlimited is the originator of the custom 6-seater Moke conversion. Our original LiMoke projects helped establish the idea that a Moke could become a genuine six-passenger vehicle while retaining the open-air character that makes it so enjoyable. That experience continues in today’s Mokes Unlimited Custom Easy Entry 6-Seater builds. Other extended Mokes may provide additional seating, but our Custom Easy Entry designation describes something more specific: a six-passenger Moke incorporating Mokes Unlimited’s distinctive custom-fabricated, easy-access sides. These body modifications are not cosmetic add-ons. They require careful fabrication and reinforcement to create a design that is functional, visually balanced and unmistakably different from a standard extended Moke. The same approach can also be incorporated into select four-passenger builds for customers who want easier entry without moving to a six-seat configuration.

Materials Selected for Real Coastal Use

Custom Mokes often live near beaches, marinas and coastal homes, so the materials used throughout the vehicle matter.

Depending on the project, a Mokes Unlimited build may include:

Lithium Performance Designed Around the Moke

The performance system is just as important as the visual design. Mokes Unlimited has spent years building, testing and driving different combinations of lithium batteries, motors, controllers and gearing specifically in electric Mokes. We work primarily with 76.8V and 96V LiFePO4 systems, including compact battery designs created to fit within the Moke’s factory battery area. Depending on the vehicle and the customer’s priorities, a build may also incorporate a 10kW high-torque motor, a higher-current controller and programming developed for that particular combination. Higher voltage alone does not create a properly engineered performance Moke. Battery capacity, BMS output, motor selection, controller capability, gearing, vehicle weight and programming all affect how the vehicle performs. This becomes especially important in a custom six-passenger Moke, where added length, seating capacity, wheels and other components can change the demands placed on the drivetrain. The battery, motor and controller should be treated as one system. That is why we select and configure the performance package around the completed vehicle rather than treating lithium as an isolated upgrade.

Three Mokes, Three Different Identities

The Mokes Unlimited Island Collection illustrates how differently the custom-build philosophy can be expressed.

Regatta

Regatta is a navy-blue Custom Easy Entry 6-Seater created with a sophisticated, nautical character.

Its extended body, distinctive easy-entry fabrication and woven-style seating immediately separate it from a conventional Moke. Marine-grade flooring, steel fender flares, premium wheels and tires, and an integrated JL Audio and Fusion sound system complete the design.

Regatta demonstrates that a six-passenger electric Moke can provide additional capacity without feeling utilitarian. It can still be refined, balanced and unmistakably personal.

Horizon

Horizon represents the more adventurous side of custom electric-Moke design.

Its Custom Easy Entry body, elevated stance, long canopy and open passenger area create a vehicle intended to be both distinctive and highly usable. A 96V lithium system and 10kW high-torque motor give Horizon a performance foundation designed to complement its custom construction.

Rather than beginning with a standard Moke and simply adding accessories, Horizon was developed as a complete concept—from its fabricated body and seating configuration to its wheels, flooring and performance system.

Dune

Dune takes a different approach.

Its clean white finish, lifted stance and larger all-terrain tires create a rugged coastal appearance while retaining the classic simplicity of an open electric Moke. It shows that customization does not always require extensive body fabrication. The right combination of stance, materials, wheels, tires and carefully selected details can completely change a Moke’s personality.

For an owner primarily interested in replacing aging batteries and maintaining relatively stock performance, a properly designed 60V lithium system may be sufficient. However, owners looking for significantly increased capacity, torque, performance, or future motor and controller upgrades may want to consider higher-voltage alternatives.

72V Moke Lithium Batteries

72V-class lithium systems are another common option in the Moke and low-speed electric vehicle market.

When comparing "72V" batteries, look closely at a ctual volage (is it only 70.4V), usable capacity (is it only 105aH), BMS current capability (Is it only 200A), physical dimensions, installation requirements, charger compatibility, and the amount of modification required to fit the battery into a Moke.

76.8V 180Ah — A Balance of Range, Performance and Easy Installation

Level 2 Charging your Moke

Charging you Moke with a Level 2 station

Charging your Moke with a J1172 EV station is not complicated. In fact, all our our 76.8V 180ah Performance Pro and our signature 96V 180aH The Beast Lithium kits come with the ability to charge at any Level 2 (220V input) station. However, not just any setup has the ability to utilize an EV charger AND, there are some important factors to consider BEFORE you just plug in.

First, the charger itself. You MUST make sure that your charger can utilize BOTH 110VAC and 220VAC input. You do not want to plug into a 220VAC input source if your charger is not designed for it.

Second, you cannot assume that just because your charger can accept both input voltages that it will, in fact, charge faster. Chargers are designed with multiple configurations of charging current. Otherwise know as amps (A). The higher the amp ratings, the faster it will charge. Yes, it is possible to have a dual voltage charger that charges at the same rate on both 110VAC and 220VAC. It is also possible to have faster charging at 220VAC. Details matter.

The generally accepted max charging rate on 110VAC (your standard household voltage) is 15A-20A because your household breakers are typically rated at the same 15-20A. A higher rate charger will continually trip your breaker. Charging on a 220VAC or Level 2 charger is totally different. You can get chargers that can charge from 15-40A, and sometime even 50A. It's a much faster charge but like the 110VAC input, your breaker and wire size needs to meet the same code requirements. Level 2 EV stations are typically designed to be able to charge at the higher amps so your limiting factor will be what the charger itself is designed to do.

Third, there is the cost to consider. The higher the charging amp rating the higher the cost. You can get a 110VAC 5 amp charger MUCH cheaper than a dual voltage 40-50A charger.

Finally, the connection itself for Level 2 capability. There are multiple ways to accomplish Level 2 charging. There are adapters that convert the J1772 nozzle to a standard outlet input to match your charging cable. There are J1172 sockets you can purchase and install on the Moke itself much like a car. And, there are a lot of various Wire harnesses, pigtails, etc. that will accomplish the task. It will be personal preference what what fits your style best.

Mokes Unlimited is proud its include a dual voltage charger in our Performance Pro Lithium kit to give you the most flexibility in charging. The reality is though that with this large 180ah 60+mile range battery, it's unlikely you will have to worry about needing to recharge during your journey.

1). How many cells and what voltage is your option? For example. 24 cells x 3.2V = 76.8V nominal not “72V”. Conversely, 22 cells x 3.2V = 70.4V. Also not "72V". These cars are heavy and need all the voltage you can get if you want to maximize your investment. Voltage is accurately represented at 20% state of charge as the nominal value. Not 100% SOC or peak where the charger stops charging. More voltage=more power. It is that simple.

2). How many amp hours (aH) is the battery? aH is the capacity. Capacity dictates the range, or how far you can go on a single charge. More aH does not increase performance. That’s the job of voltage. There are batteries with capacities from 105aH to 230ah. These will provide a driving range from 30 miles up to 75+ miles on a single charge. Choose the right capacity for you. More capacity, if you don’t need it, just costs more money. The storage capacity equation is quite simple: Voltage (V) x amp hours (aH) = watt hours of storage. Watt hours of storage/1,000 = kWh of storage.

3). How many Mokes have you converted? Experience is key when doing a proper installation and proper programming. You want to enjoy it, not deal with a bunch of headaches. If you want the best performance from your setup, a good tune/programming from someone experienced is essential.

4). Where do you source your battery cells? Some installers are using repurposed EV modules cloaked in vinyl wrap and stacked together. It doesn't matter where they were made when they were new. What's important is where they were sourced from and what happened before your installation. Used lithium ion (li-ion) EV modules are cheap on places like EBay for a reason. You should know what you are paying for. We don't believe in using unsafe or used components. See #7 below for more on the Li-ion subject.

5). Have vendors send you pictures of their installs. You want to make sure you are getting a quality pack that fits your tastes and expectations. BMS units exposed to the elements will have larger potential for failure let alone the exposure to high voltage. All components should be safely enclosed in a single metal enclosure.

6). Warranty? Does the pack come with a warranty? How long is the warranty? Is the warranty prorated and what is the decline curve? What is the exact process that you as a consumer will have to follow for any warranty claim? Many require you to send the battery in for an assessment first. Shipping a 150#+ lithium battery is neither cheap nor easy.

7). SAFETY MATTERS: What lithium chemistry is used on your battery? All “lithium” are not the same. There are multiple chemistries used in cell manufacturing. The most common for public use are lithium ion (Li-ion) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo4/LFP). Each have their differences. Make sure you research the differences between them and cho ose what’s right for you. "Google li-ion vs lifepo4" first. Then, make the choice. There is a reason most manufacturers use the LiFePo4. Safety and life span of cells (# of cycles) are two important considerations. .

Tommy and Crystal Horton, co-owners and founders of Seaside Adventures since 2020, wanted to expand their popular Moke offerings, providing higher capacity vehicles for large families and parties. They are pleased to announce that the LiMoke, the first six-passenger Moke in existence, is now available for rent at their 606 North Ponce de Leon location in historic St. Augustine, Florida .

“This unique vehicle was inspired by customer feedback,” says Crystal Horton, co-founder and owner of Seaside Adventures. “Our guests loved the convenience, comfort, and cool look of our Mokes, but they wanted a higher capacity.
